  • In Brief

Being the first site on Bristol’s historic Harbour front, this spot is about as central to the city as it gets. Awash with stag-do wigs and plastic pint glasses, the landlords were keen to see a more rounded, family friendly, and culturally focussed contribution to the area.

We helped to nurture this heritage asset back to life whilst building a new home for the established Bristol Ferry Boat Company and The Harbourside Market. As a venue, a suitably Bristolian mix was on offer, ranging from sea shanties to dub, and as a bar & restaurant the oyster counter beside the stout tap sums it up neatly.

The utilitarian but elegant building became more apparent as the structure was uncovered. With space at a bit of a premium though, the considerations of cellar space, integrated sound systems and correct attenuation, heat dumps and kitchen refrigeration all took a little extra head scratching.

Some familiar Victorian shed and dock warehouse materiality was incorporated, grounding the space in its practical past, whilst also allowing a little extra celebration: Cast steel columns became painted maypole’s; walls of new, sympathetically crafted local Douglas Fir shelving were added and loaded with tipples and wares, and cast concrete was lifted and lightened with painted graphic.
